MOONEY PEARLS UPDATE MARCH 2024

BEST OF THE BEST

It was great to have the green back in mid December for the bowls clubs members, and most likely a bonus for the Mooney Club’s coffers with the odd barefoot bowls Christmas party too.  Usually we’ve had a much longer wait but Chubbsy did his magic and the green is running very well, providing much pleasure and competition.

THE GREEN TURNS 50

The planned “Green Turns 50 New Years Eve Have a Go” didn’t draw the crowd that the Pearls had hoped for, but the people that did attend reportedly had a great evening.  Admittedly it was prepared with late notice.  Momentum for these type of events historically builds a following year after year, and it’s hoped we can promote it even more widely for next New Year’s Eve, provided it doesn’t clash with any Mooney Club plans.  It is a great venue for family friendly games, meeting your neighbours and socialising, and with refreshments and snacks available from the club, it’s hoped that it’s a win-win and everyone benefits.

DANGAR ISLAND “THE GREEN IS OUT” INVITATIONAL

Sadly we heard one of our competitors, Arn Storch, from the Dangar Island Club passed away at the end of January after a short battle with the Big C.  Arn was instrumental in ensuring The Pearls repeatedly lose, but equally have the best of times as guests at our annual play-offs on the island.  We all hold many happy memories of a fine man and a fun and fabulous bowls competitor who will be sorely missed.

THE PEARLS SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIPS

This year we had to bring our singles championship competition forward so we could qualify for the state championships to be held in May.  We played hard and fast, with last year’s winner, Karen (Kanga) Cain and our Club President, Anastasia Delaporta playing head for head in the final, held last weekend.  According to the huge audience it drew, it was a nail biting game with both players very well matched.  However, Anastasia was jubilant at the end and will be representing our club at state level.  Well done to everyone who competed, organised and volunteered!

AND FINALLY…

We are about to commence a mixed pairs competition with the Mud Crabs.  This could be a very exciting competition with some great talent.  It will be interesting to see the team line up.
